Today Duolingo suddenly introduced a large amount of new grammar and vocabulary in one lesson. There was so much that I didn't understand, so I turned to ChatGPT for help.

I am currently using a ChatGPT Plus subscription, and one advantage of the subscription is that it allows you to upload many images in a single conversation. I took screenshots of the Duolingo exercises — about twenty of them — and uploaded them all into one chat.

My prompt

I wrote this prompt:

Duolingo threw a lot of new verbs and new grammar into the lesson today. I took some screenshots. Can you give me a proper lesson to teach me the verbs and grammar?

ChatGPT then analyzed the screenshots and created a short lesson based on the material that appeared in them.

It explained several things that Duolingo had introduced in the exercises:

  • how present tense verbs work
  • how to make verbs negative
  • how question words are used
  • basic word order in sentences

Having the grammar explained was extremely helpful.

I asked a few follow-up questions when something was still confusing, and ChatGPT explained the points again in more detail. Because it had seen the screenshots, the explanations were based directly on the examples I had just encountered, but the chatbot also added other examples to help explain the concepts to me.

I'm really enjoying using chatbots to help me with my language learning. It's so cool that whenever I have any question about vocab or grammar I can get immediately have my questions answered. I don't have to search through grammar books or wait for time with a language helper.

I’m almost three weeks into learning Greek now. At the moment I’m mostly using Duolingo and ChatGPT, and I’m also doing some Bible reading. I’m not doing enough speaking yet. I need to find more ways to get out into the community and practice. It’s hard to push yourself to do that in the beginning when you know so little.
