Day 12 Using ChatGPT to Learn a Verse
I've only been learning Greek for about 10 days, so memorizing a long passage of Scripture felt a bit unrealistic.
But I still wanted to try learning part of a verse. So I experimented with something simple: using ChatGPT as a study partner to help me memorize a short Bible verse in Greek.
The verses I chose were from Matthew. Matthew 5:13-14 (ESV): “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden."
I've only been learning Greek for about 10 days now, so that was obviously too much for me to learn. So I focused on "You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world." I found the verses in Greek and copied them into a new ChatGPT chat.
My prompt
Can you help me to memorize these two verses from Matthew. I am a beginner in Greek.
Εσείς είστε το αλάτι της γης.
Εσείς είστε το φως του κόσμου.
I didn't know how ChatGPT would handle my request, but it gave such a good response. It gave me several steps.
Step 1: Understand every word
It started by giving me the pronunciation and the meaning of each word in a chart.
Step 2: Say it in small chunks (out loud)
It gave me small chunks.
- Εσείς είστε (you are)
- το αλάτι (the salt)
- της γης (of the earth)
It told me to say each chunk 3-4 times. Then it put the chunks together into a sentence and told me to repeat that.
Step 3: Notice the pattern
It pointed out the words that were repeated and the words that were different.
Step 4: Gentle daily drill (2 minutes)
It told me a few ways to practice daily.
Step 5: One small challenge (to lock it in)
It gave me part of each sentence and told me to try to write the rest.
After working through those suggestions I asked about something that was unclear to me: the words της and του. ChatGPT explained that both mean “of the”, but they change depending on the gender of the noun that follows. ChatGPT gave me a few examples.
- ο κόσμος → του κόσμου
- η μητέρα → της μητέρας
Seeing the forms side by side helped me start recognizing the pattern.
After that, I asked ChatGPT to generate lists of nouns so that I could practice the same pattern. I covered the right side of the list and tried to say the “of the …” form aloud before checking the answer. It was really helpful.
What I liked most about this exercise is that ChatGPT did such a great job designing a lesson. And I was able to extend the lesson really easily. Using ChatGPT in this way felt a bit like having a tutor available for quick explanations and practice exercises while I studied.
And I have memorized this:
Εσείς είστε το αλάτι της γης.
Εσείς είστε το φως του κόσμου.
You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world.
